What is Halogen Free?

Halogen free refers to material with NO Halogen (Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine and Iodine). Halogen free material also implies to materials which generate NO corrosive gases while combustion.

Standard Requirements of Halogen Free:-
² Total Halogen Content 『50PPM   (according to PREN 14582)
²     Amount of Halogen Acid Gas during combustion 100PPM
  (according to EN50267-2-1)
  ² pH value 』4.3  <Determination of degree of acidity of gases during combustion>
  (according to EN50267-2-2)
  ² Light transmittance 』60%   ( according to EN50268-2)

In the scope of wire and cable, IEC ( International Electrotechnical Commission) has also setup criteria to define Halogen Free materials. According to IEC 60754, the content of HCL generated from combustion of material should not exceed 5mg/g. Further to IEC 60754-2, the pH value and conductivity should meet as required.

  All in all, Halogen free cable compound should meet the following requirements:

  1)          HCL generation <= 5mg/g (0.5%)                      (IEC 60754-1)
  2)         pH value >= 4.3                                      (IEC 60754-2)
  3)          Conductivity <= 10 µS/mm                        (IEC 60754-2)
